Biomedical Engineering

Since its establishment on June 14, 1979, the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Seoul National University Hospital has been in charge of the general maintenance, safety management, and asset management of medical devices, and the research and development in biomedical engineering.

The Department of Biomedical Engineering has 31 employees including the department chair and deputy chair. The department is composed of 5 subparts: medical technology support, medical equipment safety, imaging diagnostic equipment, clinical treatment equipment, and medical equipment assets. Major tasks at the department include medical device maintenance and its safety management, medical device purchase review and asset management, medical device introduction deliberation, and tasks for clinical practice and research. Our department supports the practice in clinical departments by performing overall safety management of medical devices in our hospital with expertise in biomedical engineering.

The Biomedical Engineering Department utilizes the HIS medical device management system to systematically manage medical devices in our hospital. With the HIS, our department can perform effective task management including the management of medical device asset registrations, problem reports and services, early inspections for problem prevention, cost management, and equipment replacement evaluations.

Since the ISO9001 quality management system in 2008 and its continuous work improvement afterwards, the Biomedical Engineerig Department in our hospital has been the first in Korea to be accredited by the Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme (KOLAS No. 549) of the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy in Korea. Our department has established a system for the safety and performance evaluations of medical devices to improve the reliability and efficiency of work and has been striving to manage medical devices in accordance with the standards of medical institution certification systems to realize improvements in medical care and patient safety.

As one of the national central hospital in Korea, our department is actively involved in public medical services, annual field education programs for students majoring in biomedical engineering, and technical training on medical devices for hospital staffs in developing countries.
