The Division of Hemato Oncology of the Department of Pediatrics collaborates with top-notch specialists to provide an accurate diagnosis of cancer, the best treatment appropriate for each patient, and various types of social and economic support. Through cooperation, we are making every effort to help children and adolescents, who differ from adults, overcome severe and painful diseases and become healthy members of society.
We started the pediatric and adolescent cancer ward for the first time in Korea, and have been leading in domestic pediatric and adolescent cancer treatment up to the present. We not only have long treatment experience in this field, but are leading various research and clinical trials for the best treatment.
1,000-1,200 cancers in children and adolescents occur every year in Korea, with characteristics and patterns that are very different from those of adults. In addition, due to the peculiarity of childhood and adolescence with continual growth and development, cooperation with various specialists related to childhood diseases is more required than any other disease. We continually collaborate with the best surgical departments, including the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery, Surgery, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology, Thoracic surgery, and Urology, and with the excellent diagnosis support teams that help with accurate diagnosis and evaluation of treatment response, such as the Department of Pathology, Radiology, Diagnostic Laboratory Medicine, and Nuclear Medicine. We are also making steady efforts by operating hospital schools, various aid associations, and shelters for the social and economic support of patients and their families as well as medical care. Besides this, Korea’s first pediatric palliative care team is under active operation in which every member is doing their best for top-notch integrative treatment.
