- Expanding essential and public healthcare; a hub for future medicine connecting industry, academia, research, healthcare, and government
Seoul National University Baegot Hospital, which will lead the future of healthcare, has finally broken ground. This milestone comes after years of effort since the establishment agreement in 2019 and the successful preliminary feasibility study by the Ministry of Economy and Finance in 2021, made possible through the support of the local community.
Seoul National University Hospital announced that the groundbreaking ceremony for SNU Baegot Hospital was held at the construction site in Siheung, Gyeonggi Province, at 3 p.m. on the 29th September. The ceremony marked the official start of the hospital’s construction and was held to share its vision of strengthening essential medical services as a public healthcare institution growing together with the local community.
Around 300 distinguished guests attended the event, including SNUH President Young-Tae Kim, former presidents Chang-Seok Seo and Yeon-Soo Kim, Vice Minister of Education Eun-Ok Choi, SNU President Hong-Lim Yoo, Gyeonggi Province Governor Dong-Yeon Kim, National Assembly member Jung-Sik Cho, and Siheung Mayor Byung-Taek Lim.
SNU Baegot Hospital will be built with one basement level and twelve above-ground floors, covering a total floor area of 111,492㎡ (33,726 pyeong) and a total project cost of approximately 587.2 billion KRW. With 800 beds in total, the hospital aims to open in 2029, providing top-tier medical services for severe and emergency cases. The hospital will operate 27 clinical departments, including internal medicine, surgery, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology, along with six specialized centers—Cancer Center, Maternal and Child Center, Cardiovascular and Cerebrovascular Center, Emergency Medical Center, International Healthcare Center, and Health Promotion Center.
SNU Baegot Hospital is expected to fill the essential healthcare gap in southwestern Gyeonggi Province and respond to the growing national demand for care in serious and rare diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular diseases, and high-risk maternal and neonatal conditions. Rather than functioning merely as a branch hospital, it will serve as a core hub concentrating SNUH’s capabilities in clinical care, research, and education, leading convergent medical research and nurturing medical professionals who will shape the future of healthcare.
The extensive medical data accumulated by SNUH over many years will be integrated with AI and advanced network systems to ensure high-quality clinical services from the moment the hospital opens. By linking its infrastructure with regional medical institutions, SNUH plans to establish a collaborative model for public healthcare innovation.
In cooperation with the nearby Seoul National University Siheung Campus and the bio-specialized industrial complex, the hospital will further strengthen its role as a cutting-edge medical institution that develops and standardizes innovative medical technologies. Inside the hospital, automated mobility and robotic logistics systems will be introduced to enhance operational efficiency and patient safety, realizing the vision of a future-oriented smart hospital.
Siheung Mayor Byung-Taek Lim said, “This groundbreaking ceremony marks the moment when a long-awaited dream of Siheung citizens finally becomes reality. The city will work closely with Seoul National University and SNUH to ensure the successful completion of the hospital and create results that both citizens and the nation can feel.”
SNU President Hong-Lim Yoo stated, “The construction of SNU Baegot Hospital is an important milestone in the growth of the SNU Siheung Campus as a hub leading future medicine and the bioindustry. As a university contributing to the nation and society, Seoul National University will open a new chapter in Korean healthcare and research together with Siheung City.”
SNUH President Young-Tae Kim said, “The construction of SNU Baegot Hospital will not only expand essential medical services in the southwestern Gyeonggi region but also establish a new standard for Korean healthcare by combining SNUH’s capabilities. Through a large-scale bio-cluster connecting industry, academia, research, healthcare, and government, we will develop SNU Baegot Hospital into a base for future medicine and contribute to the growth of the bio-research industry.”
