Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH), led by President Kim Young Tae, announced the official opening of its Disaster Recovery (DR) Center, 'BESTBunker!', on the 1st of this month. The center aims to ensure continuity in medical services and patient safety even in the event of a disaster.

'BESTBunker!' is an advanced DR infrastructure built to protect the hospital's core digital systems from unexpected disasters such as fires and cyberattacks. It minimizes medical service interruptions by operating on a cloud-based system that synchronizes all hospital business systems in real time, including HIS (Hospital Information System), PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System), and groupware.

As a result, if a disaster strikes the main center, the hospital’s operational systems can be swiftly switched to the DR center within 30 minutes. This allows critical tasks such as patient care, surgeries, and prescriptions to continue uninterrupted, while recovery efforts for the main center are conducted concurrently, ensuring patient safety is prioritized even in times of crisis.

Notably, the DR center at SNUH is the first of its kind in a domestic medical institution to go beyond simple data replication, offering cloud-based replication of the entire operational system. This enhances digital resilience significantly, setting a new standard for disaster recovery in healthcare institutions.

Furthermore, to improve disaster response capabilities and avoid potential risks from the same disaster zone, the center is located about 150 km away from the hospital and the main center in Daejeon. It is equipped with earthquake-resistant designs and superior power and HVAC systems, ensuring excellent stability.

Jeong Chang-Wook, the Director of the Information Technology Department, stated, "With the official opening of DR Center, Seoul National University Hospital has significantly advanced its disaster recovery system, enhancing both our crisis response capabilities and continuity of care. We are strengthening the stability of our digital healthcare environment." He continued, "Through this, we will continue to lead the digital disaster recovery efforts in domestic healthcare institutions, while providing patient-centered, safe medical services."

In addition, SNUH continues to enhance its digital healthcare innovation foundation by building next-generation hospital information systems, next-gen groupware, private cloud data centers, and advanced DR centers, thus strengthening the flexibility and stability of its medical IT infrastructure.
