On January 24th, Seoul National University Hospital(SNUH) announced the opening of its ‘Healthcare AI Research Center.’ The establishment of this research center is an important first step towards applying AI technology to healthcare to provide accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment options, improve patient care quality, and drive innovation in the medical field.

The opening ceremony held at the CJ Hall of Seoul National University Children's Hospital on January 23rd was attended by key figures including President Kim Young Tae from SNUH, Director Jang Byeong Tak (Professor of Computer Engineering at Seoul National University) from Healthcare AI Research Center, Director Jang Byeong Tak (Professor of Computer Engineering at Seoul National University), President Yoo Hong Rim from Seoul National University, Dean Kim Jung Eun from Seoul National University College of Medicine, Vice Chairman Choi Jang Hyeok from Personal Information Protection Commission, and Director Jung Eun Young from Ministry of Health and Welfare Health Industry Policy Bureau.

SNUH was the first in Korea to start digitizing medical records and possesses accurate and extensive medical data. It has also previously declared its pioneering outlook as a research-oriented hospital that will lead the national digital bio-health industry. Last year, SNUH was designated as the first ‘National Strategic Technology Specialized Research Institute’ by the Ministry of Health and Welfare, and its research capabilities and vision were recognized nationally. SNUH has already established an innovative research environment with a cutting-edge GPU cluster, specialized research institute data platform ‘NSTRI’, integrated big data research platform ‘SNUHUB’, CDW research search system ‘SUPREME’, and pseudonymized medical record viewer ‘DeView’. Furthermore, it plans to strengthen its robust research infrastructure in the future, with a focus on medical innovation through AI-based research and smart healthcare systems.

Based on this substantial experience and advanced technology infrastructure, SNUH has established a Healthcare AI Research Institute, laying an important foundation for opening a new chapter in medical AI research. The institute will focus on strengthening AI research capabilities, developing AI medical systems, establishing AI data platforms, and cultivating professional personnel, and will develop AI-based diagnostic systems and patient-tailored treatments to provide precise diagnosis and efficient treatment methods.

The research institute, which values AI, Collaboration, and Healthcare as its core values, aims to create a sustainable healthy future through innovative AI research. The research institute plans to lead patient-tailored treatment and medical innovation through the development of AI-based precision diagnosis systems and customized treatments.

The Healthcare AI Research Center is divided into the Data Science Center and the Technology Research Center and conducts research in various fields such as ▲Big Data ▲Infrastructure ▲Analytical Statistics ▲Medical Imaging ▲Biosignals ▲Genomics ▲Digital Pathology. It plans to utilize the SNUH Convergence Medical Technology Institute and the Research Cooperation Center in the Yangjae-dong AI Hub to cooperate with domestic and foreign AI companies and universities and strengthen the global research network.

Furthermore, SNUH plans to strengthen industry-academia cooperation with major domestic research institutes such as Seoul National University College of Engineering and KAIST, as well as major IT companies, and operate an education program to foster AI researchers to secure AI experts. The research center plans to establish the foundation for AI medical research by building the latest GPU infrastructure and a large-scale data platform and to promote various research projects for the commercialization of AI medical technology.

President Kim Young Tae from SNUH said, “Starting in 2025, SNUH will produce world-class research results, foster next-generation medical AI experts, and develop innovative medical technologies to achieve comprehensive advancements that can be applied to actual clinical settings.” He added, “Through joint research with global research institutes, we will open new horizons in the field of medical AI and establish a crucial springboard from which we can look beyond Korea and advance our ambitions as a world-class research institute.”
