Pediatric Endocrinology and Metabolism

Since the late professor Moon Hyung-ro first introduced pediatric endocrinology to Korea in 1960, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Pediatrics has endeavored to provide the best-standardized treatment and education to patients with pediatric endocrine diseases based on extensive clinical experience and know-how.

In addition to common endocrine diseases such as diabetes mellitus, pituitary disease, thyroid disease, disorders of adrenal gland, disorders of calcium and mineral metabolism, hypogonadism, and disorders of sex development, we are in charge of treatment for rare genetic diseases such as Turner syndrome, Prader-Willi syndrome, Klinefelter syndrome, and Down syndrome, etc.

Moreover, we treat pediatric patients with disorders of growth or puberty (short stature, precocious puberty, or delayed puberty), obesity, metabolic syndrome, and lipid disorders. We continue to manage infants born preterm or with low birth weight, childhood cancer survivors, and patients with chronic diseases in childhood and adolescence to improve quality of life and transit to healthy adulthood.

Currently, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Pediatrics is composed of three faculty members, four clinical fellows, diabetes education teams, and research teams. We treat more than 20,000 patients with pediatric endocrine disease every year and maintain multidisciplinary management with medical staffs in Seoul National University Children's Hospital. We also maintain cooperative relationships and networks with more than 20 hospitals nationwide, including Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and Boramae Hospital. The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Pediatrics has played a pivotal role in education of more than 50 pediatric endocrinologists for the past 30 years, who are faithfully treating pediatric patients with endocrine disease in major hospitals nationwide and contributing to advance academic development of pediatric endocrinology.

The pediatric diabetes education team in Seoul National University Children's Hospital, which started in 2000, is professional team
with the longest history amongst Children’s Hospital in Korea, which consists of doctors, specialized nurse, dietitian, and social worker who are certified diabetes educators in charge of systematic diabetes education. Currently, we are managing more than 500 children with type 1 diabetes, and more than 100 patients with type 2 diabetes. We have also consistently published educational booklets and treatment guidelines for pediatric patients with diabetes, and hosted diabetes camps and various educational programs. In addition, we operated programs and clinics to prevent and improve obesity and metabolic syndrome in pediatric patients with or without chronic disease including childhood cancer survivors.

The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism, Department of Pediatrics will continue to provide the best medical care and education. Based on clinical data accumulated by scientific researches to improve clinical care, we are interacting with many domestic and foreign pediatric endocrinologists through academic presentation in international conference and publication of scientific researches.
