Gastrointestinal Surgery
Gastrointestinal Surgery is a specialized field of surgery that performs treatment and research on various diseases that occur in the gastrointestinal tract. The main diseases include gastric adenocarcinoma, gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST), morbid obesity, peptic ulcer disease, and other small intestine diseases.
The Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery in Seoul National University Hospital is dedicated to medical treatment, research and education as the “The world best center of gastric cancer treatment and research”. As a result, we have been certified as “Seoul National University Hospital World Class Center”
In the part of medical treatment, about 1,000 surgeries were performed annually, accumulating many experiences such as 20,000 cases of cumulative gastric cancer surgery in the world for the first time in 2007, and 30,000 cases in 2019. SNUH Gastrointestinal Surgery has led clinical studies that underlie the latest surgical techniques such as laparoscopic surgery, functional preservation surgery, and fluorescence surgery. The qualitatively high long-term survival rate and post-operative mortality rate of 0.08% represent the world's highest grade. At the multidisciplinary meeting of gastric cancer, which started in 2005 and achieved 400 times in 2021, experts from various fields related to gastric cancer gather to discuss the most appropriate diagnosis and treatment plan, and actively discuss academic clinical research.
In the part of research, publication and citation index (H-index), which evaluates research influence, ranked 8th in the world when evaluating “gastrectomy” as a keyword, and 12th in the world as “gastric cancer” (based on 2011-2015 publication).
