Emergency Medicine

The Emergency Medical Center is established to provide more comprehensive and effective treatment to patients visiting the emergency room. In Korea, a nationwide emergency medical system began to be established when the Seoul Olympics in 1988 was held. This system has been developed at a rapid pace under the full support of the government as the importance and speed of emergency medical care were emphasized after major disasters such as the collapse of Sampoong Department Store in the mid-1990s.

Established in February 1996, the Department of Emergency Medicine at Seoul National University Hospital has 18 professors, 12 clinical fellows, and 27 emergency medicine residents. Our department was designated and newly built as the Regional Emergency Medical Center in Seoul in 2004. Then, it was newly designated as the Regional Emergency Medical Center in the northwest region of Seoul in 2017. With an adult emergency room with 36 beds, pediatric emergency room with 12 beds, 30 short-term emergency units, and an emergency intensive care unit with 20 beds, we make sure that stable intensive care and continuous admission treatment can be provided for patients that visit our emergency room. We are also establishing a collaborative system with various clinical departments on admission treatment.

To provide efficient and systemic emergency medical care, emergency medical specialists are in charge of medical care and management 24 hours a day at the emergency room. They provide prompt medical care to patients suffering from various conditions including those in the scope of the internal medicine and surgery, as well as emergency medicine such as CPR, addiction, and injury. We working closely with other clinical departments for patients who need immediate medical care due to severe conditions such as myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular disease, and severe injury so that the final treatment can be quickly provided as needed.

At the Emergency Center at Seoul National University Hospital, systematic emergency medical care and patient consultation can be provided 24 hours a day through the organic collaborative system with other clinical departments. The Pediatric Emergency Room at Seoul National University Hospital was designated as a pediatric emergency medical center on January 1, 2020, and has been operated with our faculty members specializing in both emergency medicine specialty and pediatrics to maintain a high level of pediatric emergency care.
