Orthopedic Surgery

Established in 1946, the Orthopedic Surgery Department at Seoul National University Hospital has been in charge of medical care, education, and research on diseases and traumas in the musculoskeletal system that includes the upper limbs, lower limbs, and spine. The Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Seoul National University Hospital deals with all problems in the musculoskeletal system ranging from the surgical treatment to non-surgical treatments such as preventative care and rehabilitation. In the Orthopedic Surgery Department at Seoul National University Hospital, the Korean Orthopaedic Association was organized in 1948, published the first Korean Orthopaedic Association Journal, and has grown into the world-class department of medicine. Currently, as of 2017, our 19 faculty members are conducting specialized treatment and research in the fields of pediatric and adolescent orthopedics, oncology, and trauma and working together with clinical fellows, residents, nurses, and hospital staff to provide patient care. We are doing our best to provide our patients with medical care that is not only of the highest quality but also prompt and smooth by providing sub-specialties and collaborative work.


Our department is equipped with a human body motion analysis room, blood flow examination room, ligament examination room, foot mechanic examination room, and bone bank. It strives to deliver focused and effective treatment at the special clinics and center (knee joint, spine, hand, wrist, elbow disease and peripheral nerve disease, shoulder joint, hip joint, trauma, musculoskeletal tumor centers) specializing in each specialty.


We perform more than 6,000 surgeries every year and aim to provide safe and effective treatment. To this end, we are also putting in a great deal of effort into research. The number of papers published annually amounts to 200, entering the top 10 in rankings for research capacity as a single department of medicine. The Orthopedic Surgery Department at Seoul National University Hospital strives to maintain the best medical care and further raise the level of quality to earn world-class recognition.


Main Diseases or Research Fields 

Our department diagnoses diseases and trauma related to the musculoskeletal system and abnormalities in the structure and function and provides medical, and surgical and physical treatments. Major diseases include osteoarthritis, cervical/thoracic myelopathy, spinal deformities and deformities (scoliosis, kyphosis), trauma, sports injury, sarcoma, bone metastases, tumors in bone and soft tissues, ligament injuries, and congenital and developmental diseases.
