The First and the Best in Korea
The Division of Neonatology started the first neonatal intensive care in Korea in 1954 and introduced an incubator for the first time into the neonatal ward in 1960. In 1980, we organized a specialized unit for premature infants equipped with ventilators for newborns and patient monitoring devices. With the establishment of the Seoul National University Children's Hospital in 1985, a 20-bed neonatal intensive care unit filled with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities was opened and we have made a significant contribution to the development of neonatal care in Korea.
Leading National and International Newborn Care.
The birth rate of premature babies and critically ill newborns is rapidly increasing due to the increase in at-risk pregnancies despite the decline in the fertility rate in Korea like other developed countries. Therefore, the neonatology care has become more important than ever. The neonatal intensive care unit at Seoul National University Children's Hospital works together with Seoul National University Bundang Hospital and Seoul National University Boramae Medical Center and forms the largest network of neonatal intensive care in Korea by sharing human resources and treatment protocols to provide world-class treatment based on our abundant clinical experience. In addition, our team is actively involved in the national and international conferences of basic and clinical research to perform most advanced neonatology care.
Patient-centered and Personalized Care
At the Fetal and Neonatal Center of Seoul National University Hospital, which is operated in cooperation with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, we discuss the fetus's condition before birth and make sure that appropriate treatments and preparations are made before childbirth.
In addition, we provide comprehensive care for the babies by actively interacting with multidisciplinary team of clinicians, such as the Department of Pediatrics (including the Divisions of Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Neurology, Pediatric Endocrinology, etc.), Pediatric Radiology, Pediatric Surgery, Pediatric Thoracic Surgery, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Pediatric Neurosurgery, and Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery. We also encourage family members to actively get involved in the parental care by staying with their children or Kangaroo caring, and support them by participating in various programs provided by Integrative Care Hub in the Children’s hospital.
Following up on the Child’s Growth and Development after Discharge
The specialists in the Division of Neonatology, nurses, nutritionists, pharmacists and social workers work as a team and educate parents about the child care and lactation before discharge from the hospital. In addition, we have established a critically ill newborn follow-up program composed of multidisciplinary team to ensure the growth and development of babies with dedicated coordinator. We, the medical team of the Division of Neonatology at Seoul National University Children's Hospital, are working our best to provide excellent medical care based on the most current medical knowledge by cooperating with experienced healthcare professionals and adding most sophisticated and developed technology to make our unit the highest level in Korea.
