Radiology
Our medical team at the Department of Radiology in Seoul National University Hospital is composed of radiology specialists, radiology technicians, nurses, and administrative personnel and provides optimal medical care through diagnosis, treatment, imaging information management, and patient-centered care based on extensive experience using various imaging techniques.
1. Our Roles
- Development and implementation of various imaging techniques and diagnosis of diseases through imaging examinations
- Advice on medical treatment through imaging-guided biopsy, non-surgical treatment, and collaboration with other departments
- Follow-up and medical advice for patients who received imaging-guided non-surgical treatment
2. Clinical Services
The Department of Radiology at Seoul National University Hospital annually performs approximately 270,000 computed tomography, 150,000 ultrasound and ultrasound-guided procedures, 100,000 magnetic resonance imaging, and 35,000 angiographies. We have a collaborative system with other departments by managing the Cancer Imaging Center at the cancer hospital and the Department of Pediatric Radiology at the children's hospital.
3. Equipment and Facilities
The Department of Radiology at Seoul National University Hospital is equipped with 12 computerized tomography (CT) scanners including dual-energy CT, which are special state-of-the-art devices, 13 magnetic resonance imaging systems (MRI) centering on the latest high-specification 3T, and 27 ultrasound devices including the high-specification models that can perform real-time image fusion with CT/MRI. We also employ a PET-MRI system that simultaneously provides both MRI and PET data, jointly with the Department of Nuclear Medicine. In addition, we strive for the development and clinical use of state-of-art imaging technologies such as functional MRI, MR spectroscopy, and molecular imaging and provide the best diagnosis and treatment to patients with cutting-edge devices and highly trained professionals.

The Department of Radiology at Seoul National University Hospital has 11 divisions. The medical professionals in each division are playing a leading role in the field of radiology inside and outside of the country through the diagnosis and treatment, active research (2,758 published papers, 45,311 citations, and 16.4 citations per paper in 2011 - 2020), and education programs.
- Abdominal Imaging
Diagnostic imaging, imaging-guided biopsy, and non-surgical treatment for diseases in the liver, bile duct, pancreas, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, and abdominal cavity
- Breast Imaging
Diagnostic imaging and imaging (ultrasound, mammography, or MRI)-guided biopsy (including stereotactic biopsy, vacuum-assisted biopsy, and vacuum-assisted excision) for diagnosis of benign and malignant breast diseases
- Cardiovascular Imaging
Diagnostic imaging of adult heart, coronary artery, aorta, limb blood vessel abnormalities, and congenital heart anomalies
- Emergency Radiology
Diagnostic imaging of the acutely ill or traumatized patients in the Emergency Department setting
- Genitourinary Imaging
Diagnostic imaging of the genitourinary system and fetal anomalies, imaging (ultrasound)-guided biopsy, and non-surgical treatment for diseases in kidney, bladder, prostate, adrenal gland, ovary, uterus, and retroperitoneal cavity
- Interventional Radiology
Non-surgical, non-neurological angiographic studies and treatment of various vascular disease, liver cancers, gastrointestinal, and biliary diseases: hepatic arterial embolization and radiation embolization for liver cancer, re-opening of arteriovenous fistula in patients on dialysis, intravascular treatment of aortic and lower extremity vascular diseases, vascular embolization in bleeding patients, thrombolysis for deep venous thrombosis, embolization of vascular malformation, drainage for biliary obstruction and abscess, stent insertion for biliary tract and gastrointestinal tract
- Musculoskeletal Imaging
Diagnostic imaging, imaging (fluoroscopy, ultrasound, or CT)-guided biopsy, aspiration, and percutaneous drainage for various musculoskeletal diseases, pain intervention for spinal and joint diseases, and imaging-guided radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the musculoskeletal tumors
- Neuroradiology
Diagnostic imaging of the central nervous system (brain, cerebrovascular systems, spine), head and neck, and thyroid gland, imaging-guided diagnostic procedures (aspiration or biopsy) for diseases in head and neck regions and thyroid gland, and imaging-guided non-surgical treatment of thyroid nodules (ethanol injection and radiofrequency ablation)
- Neurointerventional Radiology
Non-surgical treatment of cerebrovascular disease (stroke, cerebral hemorrhage, cerebral aneurysm, cerebrovascular malformation) by aneurysm embolization, carotid stent implantation, and thrombolysis
- Pediatric Radiology
Diagnostic imaging, imaging (fluoroscopy, ultrasound, or CT)-guided biopsy, and non-surgical treatment for congenital/acquired diseases for patients ranging from newborns to adolescents
- Thoracic Imaging
Diagnostic imaging and imaging (cone-beam CT)-guided biopsy of the lung and mediastinum, and non-surgical treatment of pneumothorax, lung abscess, and pleural effusion
