Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine
Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine
Established in 1958, Seoul National University Hospital Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine is composed of 13 full-time and funding professors, 26 clinical professors, 5 fellows, and 39 residents. Engaged in education, research, and medical treatment, we serve as a core medical department of Seoul National University Hospital.
In terms of the Anesthesiology Department’s work, we administer anesthesia for about 40,000 operations per year in 33 operating rooms in Seoul National University Hospital and 10 operating rooms in the Children’s Hospital, including the delivery rooms. In some cases we administer anesthesia outside the operating room, such as in the Cardio-Cerebrovascular Center, CT, and angiography room. Preoperative evaluation and optimization are performed through an evaluation of the condition of patients before anesthesia. In the operating room, we administer anesthesia in specialized fields, such as cardiopulmonary anesthesia, transplant anesthesia, local anesthesia, pediatric anesthesia, and obstetric anesthesia, along with general anesthesia. We also provide postoperative patient management in the recovery room and intensive care unit.
The Pain Center mainly treats outpatients with acute and chronic pain. We also perform pain treatment through a range of approaches that include drug treatment, nerve block, nerve destruction, and nerve stimulation for types of pain that cannot be resolved through internal medical and surgical treatments alone. In addition, specialized treatment for patients with cancer-related pain or cancer treatment-related pain is provided at the Cancer Pain Center in the Cancer Hospital.
The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine is playing a leading role not only in patient care, but also in education and research. Education is provided to students entrusted by Seoul National University and various domestic and international medical schools through general anesthesia and pain medicine, as well as practical training in and outside the operating room. In addition, a wide range of specialized education is provided for medical staff who have visited many overseas hospitals. Weekly case discussions and lectures are held through the Grand Round held with Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, and Boramae Hospital. In addition, special lectures and book reviews for residents are conducted twice a week, and independent journal reviews are held in each area of anesthesia. We have also played a leading role in research, publishing over 100 domestic and international papers every year.
The Department of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine of Seoul National University Hospital has been leading the development of Anesthesia and Pain Medicine in Korea since its inception, and is growing into the best department in Korea through our dedication to presenting a new vision. We will continue to protect the health and well-being of the people and do our best to develop into a world-class Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine Department.
