1. Introduction to the Department of Pediatric Surgery
The Department of Pediatric Surgery of Seoul National University Hospital began treatment as an independent division for the first time in Korea on May 15, 1978, and has performed surgery for the largest number of pediatric surgeons in Korea to date. More than 1,400 surgeries are performed every year, and about half of them are performed with minimally invasive surgeries such as laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, and robot surgery.
19 fellows have been produced since the establishment of the Pediatric Surgery Department. Currently, 3 professors and 2 dedicated nurses are faithfully carrying out education, research, and treatment. The Department of Pediatric Surgery at Seoul National University Children’s Hospital is making every effort to maintain the highest medical quality in Korea, and will continue to devote itself to training domestic and international pediatric surgeons and conducting world-class academic research.
2. Major Target Diseases
Congenital malformations: Hirschsprung’s disease, imperforate anus, esophageal atresia, choledochal cyst, biliary atresia, duodenal/small intestinal obstruction
Malignant tumors: Neuroblastoma, hepatoblastoma, ovarian tumor
Defecation disorder: Constipation, discomfort, perianal abscess, anal fissures, anal fistula
Vascular abnormalities: Cysitclymphangioma, angioma
Newborn Emergency Disease: Neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis
Other benign diseases requiring surgery: Inguinal hernia, ovarian cysts, lingual frenulum disorder, thyroglossal duct cysts, benign skin tumor
