|The Department of Surgery at Seoul National University Hospital was founded in 1946. Between 1960 and 1970, the Department of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, and Plastic Surgery were separated from our department. In 1978, the Division of Pediatric Surgery was established. In recent years, surgeries have become so specialized and extended that the Division of Hepatobiliary and Pancreatic Surgery, Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Division of Colorectal Surgery, Division of Breast and Endocrine Surgery, and Division of Transplantation and Vascular Surgery were established in 2007.|
Currently, our department has Professor Kim, Sun Whe, MD as Chairman and has 19 professors, seven clinical professors, 19 fellows, and 73 residents as members. In 2009, our department performed 14,558 surgeries and cared for 173,855 outpatients, which establishes us as an undisputed center department in Seoul National University Hospital.
Our department has courses for sophomore medical students, junior medical students, sophomore dental students and graduate students. In particular, junior medical students become involved in bedside diagnosis and treatment as student doctors in wards. They also receive close experiences of actual surgical procedures at this level through utilizing our cutting-edge video-conference system. Various surgical conferences including Surgical Grand Round are held weekly to exchange the latest knowledge and to assure resident education.
Our department operates several research laboratories in Seoul National University Cancer Research Institute and Clinical Research Institute, with emphases on challenging and progressive clinical and basic research. Our department published 114 papers in SCI journals in 2009 and the quantity and quality of our publications is increasing each year.
The Department of Surgery in Seoul National University Hospital is a leading group in the Korean Surgical Society and we will continue to do our best under our missions of providing the best care to our patients, emphasizing achievement through research, and fostering the future generations of medical professionals through providing the utmost in quality education.
