The Department of Pediatric Surgery was established on May 15, 1978, - the first, independent pediatric surgical unit in Korea. It moved to the Children's Hospital for the first time in Korea in 1985. The Department performs about one thousand surgical operations each year including one hundred neonatal cases. It produced 12 fully trained pediatric surgeons.

It held the 10th Congress of the Asian Association of Pediatric Surgeons in at Seoul in 1990. (Over 25,000 surgical operations during the last 25 years.)
