The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine provides medical care for outpatients and inpatients and provides bronchoscopy and pulmonary function tests. In addition, the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine performs a critical role in the management of patients in the MICU (Medical Intensive Care Unit).
The Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine participates in many educational programs, such as the Chest Conference and Tumor Board which are held on alternating weeks, and the Joint Conference with the Department of Radiology, which is held twice a week, the Conference of Contemporary Knowledge in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, which is held every Wednesday and the Journal Meeting which is held every Saturday.
Division of Cardiology
All speciality services within the discipline of Cardiology are represented at SNUH, including invasive and intervention cardiology, electrophysiology, and pacing along with all modalities of non-invasive testing. Not only are all forms of invasive and non-invasive diagnostic modalities used, but also, therapeutic modalities such as: coronary angioplasty, stent insertion, intracoronary radiation, directional coronary atherectomy, rotational atherectomy, percutaneous mitral valvuloplasty, radio-frequency and catheter ablation, etc. These are performed daily to diagnose and treat various cardiovascular diseases. The Division of Cardiology is well recognized for excellence in the areas of clinical cardiac care for hypertension, various types of arrhythmia, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease, and congestive heart failure, adult congenital heart disease, and preventive cardiology.
Division of Gastroenterology
All members of the Division of Gastroenterology are committed to providing the best quality of care to patients with a variety of disorders affecting the gastrointestinal tract, liver, pancreas and biliary systems, and dedicated to biomedical research and education as well. Endoscopic services include endoscopic diagnosis, evaluation of tumors with endoscopic ultrasonography, capsule endoscopy and interventional management of benign and malignant gastrointestinal tract disorders. The Liver Center provides comprehensive and specified services including liver transplantation and intensive care of patients with primary liver cancers and acute/chronic hepatic failure. Resources of the renowned Hepatology section include the latest advances in endoscopic and radiologic equipment. With these minimally invasive capabilities, staff members perform more than 50,000 minimally invasive endoscopic or radiologic procedures each year, including contrast enhanced ultrasonography, multi-detector CT, SPIO or enhanced MRI, liver biopsy, endoscopic variceal ligation, transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, and balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration.
Among the options for the treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma are surgical resection, transarterial chemoembolization, percutaneous ethanol injection, radiofrequency ablation, chemotherapy, radiation therapy and liver transplantation. With the combination of these treatment modalities, outstanding results with minimal complications are being obtained. Pancreatobiliary section performs many kinds of special diagnostic studie the including endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, endoscopic ultrasonography and cholangioscopy. As a therapeutic procedure, staffs in Pancreatobiliary section perform endoscopic biliary or pancreatic sphincterotomy, removal of the bile duct or pancreatic duct stones, endoscopic biliary drainage, extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy and electrohydraulic lithotripsy.
Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology
The Division of Hematology/Medical Oncology provides comprehensive care for patients with acute and chronic boold disorders, leukemia, and solid tumors such as gastric, lung, and breast cancer. To help people fight cancer, the Division has been providing a multidisciplinary approach involving surgery or radiation and high levels of technological treatment. The Division's inpatient service now includes 170 beds and recently, a "day-hospital" service has begun for outpatient-based chemotherapy. In particular, 35 beds in the hemarology unit have been specially prepared as isolated facilities in order to decrease the risk of infection. The Division also provides specialty programs, including stem cell transplantation, a hereditary thrombosis clinic, and clinical trials of new anti-cancer drugs. In addition, the Division provides post-graduate training in hematology and oncology to physicians who want to be board-certified in these specialties, as well as offering educational programs to patients and their families.
Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism
The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism is involved in managing patients with diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases, pituitary diseases, diseases of the adrenal gland, disorders of the parathyroid and bone metabolism, gonadal dysfunction, lipid disorders, and other nutritional problems. A special Diabetes clinic opened in the outpatient department and a special ward for diabetes/metabolism is devoted to caring for in patients with diabetes and metabolic disorders.
Division of Allergy and Clinical Immunology
We are specialists in allergic diseases such as bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis which involve the respiratory tract, allergic diseases of the skin and gastrointestinal tract, drug allergies, and systemic allergic diseases; for example, anaphylaxis, and Churg-Strauss syndrome. The prevalence of allergic diseases is increasing in Korea because of rapid urbanization and industrialization. We have a special clinic for chronic coughing because the major causes are asthma or postnasal drip syndrome. At the Allergy Clinic, skin tests, bronchial provocation tests, allergen or drug provocation tests, tests for allergic rhinitis, and pulmonary function tests are performed. Indicated patients are treated by immunotherapy, which desensitizes desensitises the host from the causative allergen. We are also contributing to the field of research and have a number of publications on allergic disease and its pathogenesis.
Division of Nephrology
The Nephrology Division manages patients with acid-base disturbance, glomerulonephritis, interstitial nephritis, acute/chronic renal failure, and renal hypertension, and those on dialysis and transplantation programs. The Division offers consultation services, as well as inpatient and outpatient care. Our Division holds weekly and biweekly meetings: we hold research conferences or symposiums on Kidney Disease updates every Monday. There are seminars for medical school students every other Monday. Every other Thursday, we hold a conjoint conference with the Divisions of Pathology and Pediatrics to provide full and co-ordinated care in the evaluation and treatment of their patients.
Division of Infectious Diseases

It covers infectious diseases caused by various microorganisms, unidentified febrile diseases (fever of unknown origin), and AIDS patients. Its routine schedule is as follows: every Monday at noon we discuss organisms isolated from ward inpatients and their antibiotic susceptibility with clinical microbiologists. Every Tuesday we have discussions and ward rounds with hemato-oncologic staff concerning leukemia febrile patients. Every Wednesday evening we hold a seminar about various interesting topics in the infectious diseases field with Infectious Disease staff from the Departments of Pediatrics and Clinical Microbiology.
