Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (Kang,
Heung-Sik, Director), located in Bundang (300 Gumi-dong), Seongnam
City, Kyeonggi-do, began its first treatments on the 10th of May,
2003. It was set up due to a rapid increase in demand for geriatric
treatment and the government's request for the establishment of
a medical facility for local residents. |

Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, consists
6 centers : the Geriatrics Medical Center, Heart Center, Cranial
Nerve Center, Lung Center, Articulation Center, and the Health Improvement
Center and 23 departments, such as Internal Medicine, Surgery, Chest
Surgery, Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Obstetrics
and Gynecology, and Pediatrics. This hospital branch is connected
with the highest level of Korean medical technology of Seoul National
University Hospital, and accomplishes the function of a national
medical center for adult and elderly diseases, creates the perfect
digital medical treatment system, operates special centers according
to diseases, and is also a general treatment and emergency center
for residents.
Korea is experiencing a rapid increase in the number of elderly
people (over 65 years old) and that portion of the population now
represents 10.7% of the entire nation. However, despite the rapidly
increasing demand for medical treatment, the actual situation sees
a severe lack of medical treatment facilities, both public and private.
This difficulty is increasing due to the low profitability of treating elderly diseases',
resulting in an avoidance of this field by private hospitals.
Faced with these actual circumstances, Seoul National University
Bundang Hospital will open a new chapter in internal medical treatment
through performance of the function as a national medical center
for the elderly, through training and fostering a succession of
capable people, and through a systematic study of elderly diseases.
Furthermore, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital is built
in an innovative hospital environment in which an EMR system has
replaced the non-digital paper-chart facilities. The patient's treatment
data is computerized, not kept on paper, creating the first advanced
technology digital hospital of the 21st century in Korea . Doctors
can review the patient's medical records whenever and wherever by
using a notebook or PDA.
Also, the space design, which is focused on the patient's convenience and excellent scenery, harmonized with Bulgok Mountain and Tanchon stream, are a
pride of the hospital.
Seoul National University Bundang Hospital maintains an intimate
relationship of cooperation with Seoul National University Hospital,
as to offer the highest-level's medical treatment service, and will
also try to take a central role as Korea's first specialized hospital
for the elderly and treatment of adult diseases.
